Charles Foster’s journey within Coca-Cola Consolidated is one of resilience, leadership and a deep passion for empowering others. Beginning as a seasonal order builder in July 2007 at the previous Columbus, Ohio facility, Charles transitioned from a 21-year career in the Marine Corps to what would become a distinguished and impactful career at Coca-Cola Consolidated. His story is not just about personal growth but also about his dedication to transforming the teams and facilities he leads.

Charles joined Coca-Cola Enterprises shortly after retiring from the Marine Corps, seeking a way to stay active and engaged. Starting as a seasonal worker, his strong military leadership skills and ambition quickly set him apart. Within six months, he sought opportunities to train with warehouse supervisors and leads, even though no leadership roles were initially available. His persistence paid off when a supervisor position was created due to the addition of cross-dock locations in Zanesville and Mansfield, Ohio.

A Career of Progression and Full Circle Moment

Over the years, Charles climbed the ranks, embodying the values of dedication and continuous learning. After two years as a supervisor, he was promoted to Warehouse Manager in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where he embraced the challenge of managing a smaller facility to refine his leadership skills. This role led to a significant transition when Coca-Cola Enterprises became Coca-Cola Refreshments (which then became Coca-Cola Consolidated), during which Charles was elevated to Distribution Center Manager. He oversaw both warehouse and distribution operations in Fort Wayne and Anderson, Indiana, from 2011 to 2017.

Although Charles briefly left the system in 2017 to explore other opportunities, his connection to the company remained strong. In July 2021, an old friend encouraged him to return, and he rejoined Coca-Cola Consolidated as a Logistics Manager, overseeing warehouse operations in Fort Wayne and South Bend. By August 2023, he returned full circle to Columbus, Ohio, as the Senior Manager of Logistics Operations for the new automated facility.

Charles’ return to Columbus marked a poignant milestone in his career. Overseeing the operations of the new facility, which handles approximately 16 million cases annually, he couldn’t help but reflect on his beginnings. Among his current team are 13 Teammates who worked alongside him 14 years ago when he started as an order builder. James Manns, the Teammate who trained him on his first day, now works for Charles at the new facility—an experience Charles describes as a “full circle moment.”

Leading the transition to the new automated Columbus facility was a career highlight for Charles. He collaborated with engineers and construction teams on the development, construction, and design of the campus, managing a complex process that required extensive planning and problem-solving. His inclusive approach ensured a seamless transition, with Teammates actively involved in providing feedback and staying informed about progress.

Leadership Philosophy and Empowerment

Charles describes his leadership style as transformational, blending democratic and authoritative approaches depending on the situation. He strives to inspire his team, focusing on vision, purpose, and innovation. He believes that empowering his team starts with consistent actions, open communication, and a transparent relationship. For Charles, leadership is about fostering long-term growth and leaving a legacy of mentorship and guidance.

“I work for you. My job is to make sure you have what you need to be successful,” Charles often tells his team. Listening, recognizing greatness, and pushing his Teammates to achieve more than they think possible are key elements of his philosophy.

Support and Growth at Coca-Cola Consolidated

Coca-Cola Consolidated and its leadership has played a significant role in Charles’ professional development. Through the Company’s Teammate reimbursement program, he earned his college education. His roles allowed him to participate in various process improvement initiatives and experience operations across the United States.

Since joining Coca-Cola Consolidated, Charles has been involved in implementing changes and improving operations. He reflects on the consistent backing he has received from leadership, highlighting their willingness to provide resources and approve requests backed by clear data and business cases.

“Warehouse leadership truly supports my success, and I support the success of my team and the Company,” he notes.

Charles’ career has extended beyond professional achievements. Through his work, he has connected with community organizations like Big Brothers Big Sisters, Junior Achievement, and the Boys & Girls Clubs. These partnerships have allowed him to mentor and support countless children—an experience he values deeply and credits to Coca-Cola Consolidated’s encouragement and dedication to Purpose.

A Legacy of Leadership

As Charles reflects on his nearly 14 years with Coca-Cola, his journey stands as a testament to perseverance, professional growth, and the power of transformational leadership. From his beginnings as an order builder to overseeing a state-of-the-art automated facility, Coca-Cola Consolidated and the people he has led will leave a mark on Charles. His story is one of coming full circle, with a focus on creating a legacy of mentorship and innovation that will continue to shape Coca-Cola Consolidated for years to come.
